They may assist in revolutions or join in movements to undermine oppressive regimes, which may end up leading to improvements for the people. The Assassins believe in removing the people who seek to control, but generally have no interest in ruling or changing society. It's also why the Templars are far more powerful. They seek out positions of authority so that they might use that influence to shape the nations in the 'right' way. Most of the enemies from the games are powerful figures in their respective regimes.

Better that utopia takes 1000 years (or never happens at all) than it comes tomorrow at the cost of free will. The Assassins believe humanity must be free to make their own mistakes. They believe that a planet of people who want for nothing, but have no free will, is better than the 'chaos' of freedom. They wish for humanity to be safe, protected and happy, but that they can't achieve that on their own. The Templars believe that humanity needs to be controlled and guided. They do disagree on what that means, though. Basically speaking, Assassins are the type of people that tell you to go to the polls, but be informed and do your homework on every candidate before you vote.īoth wish the best for humanity. The utopia they wish isn't some place where anarchy would reign, but a place of strict discipline through knowledge that still would allow free will and individualism, leaving any choice up to the person. The Assassins believe in utopia through knowledge and freedom. The adult will tell you all the risks of trying to put out yourself, and will caution you to stay safe, but will ultimately leave the choice to you. Now, if the adult is an Assassin, on the other hand, he or she will tell you the fire is dangerous, but will also tell you you could put it out. They don't want to fast track it, as you said, but believe only their way, a way where everyone becomes alike, is the only to way to achieve utopia. Similarly, the Templars want to guide humanity to a better future their own way, through order.
The adult will keep you from touching it, because he or she believes that is the only correct way. If that adult is a Templar, the adult will tell you that the fire is dangerous and that you should not touch it. Now imagine there's an adult standing next to you. Imagine you're a little kid and you see a stick on fire.
I think the best way I've seen it being explained was this analogy by someone on this subreddit: You have the basics down, yes, but a few things are left out or slightly wrong.
